Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Place

Independence Center’s Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Place is helping address two critical needs in the St. Louis community: affordable housing and mental health. Located in the Central West End next to the Independence Center Clubhouse, the 38-unit apartment community provides safe, affordable housing for adults age 55 and older who live with mental illness. The building is designed to support residents as they age, with accessible features and convenient access to the programs, services and community available at the Clubhouse.

For residents, the impact goes beyond having a place to live. Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Place provides an opportunity to build community, maintain independence and create stability. As Independence Center Executive Director Trish Holmes shared with First Alert 4, stable, affordable and safe housing is an important foundation for anyone—and having a home where residents can feel a sense of belonging can help them recognize their potential and pursue their goals.
