May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This national effort began in 1949 to raise awareness and educate the public about mental illnesses, the realities of living with these conditions and strategies for attaining improved mental health and wellness.
This month and its mission are very near and dear to us at Independence Center and we’re proud to raise awareness and support those with serious and persistent mental illness needs every day.
This year’s Give STL Day will be May 6, 2021! Give STL Day brings the region together as one community, raising money and awareness for local nonprofits in 13 St. Louis metropolitan and surrounding areas. In addition to being a resource for donors across the St. Louis region, Give STL Day amplifies donations during the 24-hour online giving challenge.
We hope that you take advantage of this awesome event and keep Independence Center in mind as you select your favorite charities to support on May 6!

We’re proud to introduce Independence Center’s very own podcast – Let’s Rethink This!
Let’s Rethink This, launching on May 17th, is taking real conversations about mental health and mental illness from behind closed doors right out in the open. The podcast is being initiated by IC’s Business Development Manager, Abby Berger. She states, “the aim is to learn through candid conversations with families, mental health providers, community agencies and even employers the true challenges and impacts of mental illness. And, what and how we’re addressing it in our communities and society.”
The first episode is a candid conversation with Independence Center Member, Brittny Adams. Brittny has been a member for over 8 years now and is currently employed at BJC Behavioral Health as a Peer Support Specialist part-time. You may recognize her from her participation in Dancing with the St. Louis Stars, including being this past year’s emcee! Tune in to hear her story and subscribe to Let’s Rethink This to stay up-to-date with this exciting new project!
Don’t miss the first episode launching May 17!
Independence Center is thrilled to be announced as the KMOX Voice of Caring Partner for May 2021. Each month KMOX features one non-profit organization, allowing us to introduce ourselves to the STL listening audience. Thank you to KMOX, and listen for us across the airwaves!
